It was around the turn of the new millennium when something happened... Something that changed the world we were used to in a way that none of us could have ever imagined. No one seems to recall the exact source or cause of the Cataclysms, but there is not a soul alive today who does not believe it to be a time of darkness for all of humanity..

Very few records or documents endured the Cataclysms, but it is spoken in legend that the skies were alight with fire and the heavens were obscured by black haze for an entire generation. The seas boiled and churned as entire continents were swallowed under a deluge of water from the melting polar ice-caps. Great cities collapsed as the Earth opened wide to consume them whole. Nations crumbled and the race of man was embroiled in wars, endured diseases and suffered famine for several centuries. Great and proud mountain ranges were reduced to rubble and once lush green forests burned to a fine ash. Our once fruitful Earth was transformed over time to become a barren and lifeless wasteland. Animal species were lost to extinction as their habitats were eventually destroyed. It was an age of sickness and death, and the entire history and heritage of man was on the brink of being lost to eternity.

It was during the harsh era of the Cataclysms, in the first of the bloodthirsty wars, that humans proved their ultimate worth. There is a saying that "Necessity is the mother of all invention", and during the dark age of the Cataclysms the human race not only managed to survive, but they thrived in an unusual way. Before the Cataclysms, technology was already advancing at a geometric rate, but afterwards mankind began to reveal many elusive scientific truths, for both destruction and survival. To this very day, many refer to that lost knowledge as the 'Black Arts'.

Humans had mapped their own genetic structure allowing once deadly diseases and conditions to finally be understood and conquered through medical sciences. The possibility of genetic cloning was becoming a new possibility for the future. Computer technology and Internet communications were allowing quicker, more efficient, and widespread accessibility of global information. The need for survival meant new and powerful energy sources, environmental manipulation methods and technological improvement were all researched to their fullest extent during the Cataclysms.

Humans invented means of survival and saving their world in spite of the dwindling resources and increased mortality around the globe. Humans tampered with their genetic coding and cloned their frail bodies to make newer and stronger strains, breeds and subspecies of themselves. Humans had hoped they could become more resistant to the new diseases and capable of thriving in the ruined lands of the ravaged world. Dietary and hormonal supplements, inoculations, additives, preservatives, and alterations all increased the human standard of life and hope of survival. New bio mechanical implants, bionics and cybernetics became the wave of the future, allowing integrated use of the advancing technology. It was still early after the onset of the Cataclysms that the first of the Prototype BioSynth artificial species were created.

Eventually mankind began to lose the battle. Food became scarce, resources were expended, fuel sources were burnt-out, and the machines ground to a halt. The complete collapse of the Earth and extinction of the Human race was pending closer every day. The world grew very dark, cold and quiet for a very long time. The strongest of the Human survivors lived off of the scraps of civilization and formed into small battling tribes for the purpose of mutual protection and prosperity. The soil was ruined and would not sustain crops and many staple livestocks had perished from the earth forever. Governments, social order and law enforcement began to degrade as the human race seemed to de-evolve back to their early, primitive animalistic and anarchistic roots.

There were some who could see a time when there would be no one left to wander the Earth, so they stored away as much as they could. Many humans considered Cryogenic Stasis as a way to preserve themselves for the future. However, it was only the rare few genetically-altered human subspecies that would be capable of surviving such a harsh suspended animation process for any lengthy duration. It was determined if the human race was not to survive the fall, then at least the offshoots of their own genetic engineering would go on in their stead.

Humans did not perish. Our world was in ruin, but we survived. There were some who lived off the dead remains of the cadaverous Earth, like common carrion. There were some who managed to ration and wait their time in deep shelters. It was only after the many centuries of darkness that the world suddenly 'shifted' and the Great Earthquake that shook every land, marked the end of the black era of the Cataclysms. Humans realized, in an almost spiritual awakening, that their time of suffering had finally ended. The skies slowly opened and let in the lost sunlight. The oceans pushed their stolen ruined cities and rich lands back toward the surface. Plant and animal life began to slowly reappear as the biodiversity of Earth began to thrive once again. Nature found a way. The circle was never really broken and life went on.

Human factions and tribes claimed territory across the lands and stood themselves as new nations and regions capable of growing crops and raising new livestock strains once again. Trade and commerce was also reborn, along with the conflict and combat that every social structure eventually endures. Strong territories attempted to dominate the weaker factions and many were enslaved or overthrown. However, it was one person, known now as the Empress, who managed to band together all the conflicting sectors and territories under a single, but fragile political trade collective known as the Empire. The Empress devised a standard unit of commerce, known as the Imperial Chit, that minimized conflicts and stimulated interaction. It seemed like a new chance at hope and peace, though a new problem was just beginning to awake...

Across the land, many ancient technologies were being uncovered and revealed. It was the discovery of a still active and thriving secretive computer network, called the Escape that proved to be the greatest boon, and the largest threat known to the Human race in the last thousand years. Large cryogenic stasis labs, called Cells, were unknowingly activated across the Empire far below the ground. As each link to the Escape was activated, a dozen more unknown components in the entire network were also revived. Many genetically mutated animal species, called BioBreeds crawled and fought their way back to the surface to repopulate, what was supposed to be, a dead world. These creatures multiplied at alarming rates and mutated to adapt to their new surroundings, becoming more adapted for survival. Humans became powerless to stop the new incursion, as many of these Cells, nicknamed Breeders became hidden or well guarded lairs for these genetic mutations. It was within the same type of Cells that the artificially enhanced BioSynths also began to stir...

Currently the Earth hangs in a fragile balance. Political sectors constantly conflict with not only one another, but must also fight for simple survival against newly mutated BioBreed incursions. The environment is in ruins, but within those ruins is an opportunity for regrowth. The future of humanity lies not in the destination of tomorrow, but in the choices of today...
